As Australians relish in Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s declaration that the country has successfully flattened the COVID-19 infection curve, a new phrase is beginning to gain momentum amongst businesses: COVID-safe workplaces.
Last Tuesday, national cabinet deliberation focused predominantly on a relaxation of restrictions expected to be unveiled on Friday. Materials have also been prepared to guide employers in how to maintain COVID-safe workplaces.
Professor Brendan Murphy, Australia’s Chief Medical Officer said on Tuesday that businesses can expect some significant operating changes, stating, “We want cleaning products everywhere. We want staff to have a responsibility for hygiene. Hand sanitiser everywhere. Everybody sanitising their hands”
So, what does this mean for workplaces?
The model Work Health and Safety (WHS) laws require you to take care of the health, safety and welfare of your workers, including yourself and other staff, contractors and volunteers, and others (clients, customers, visitors) at your workplace.
You must also provide adequate facilities in your workplace to protect your workers from contracting COVID-19.
Facilities that are required include:
· washroom facilities including adequate supply of soap, water and paper towel
· hand sanitiser, where it is not possible for workers to wash their hands, and
· staff rooms that are regularly cleaned and allow for physical distancing.
How can your business prepare to be COVID-safe?
